NeatZip

FAQ

Q. How do I create a ZIP?

There are two ways. Drag any files or folders onto the NeatZip window, or in Finder, Control-click (right-click) a file or folder and choose Services > "Clean ZIP with NeatZip…".

Q. What does "clean" mean?

NeatZip never writes macOS-only metadata into the archive — no __MACOSX folder, no .DS_Store, and no ._* (AppleDouble) files. The ZIP contains exactly the files you selected, so it looks tidy on Windows and Linux too.

Q. Can NeatZip open or extract ZIP files?

No. NeatZip only creates ZIP files; it does not extract them. macOS already extracts ZIP archives when you double-click them in Finder.

Q. How do I set a password?

When you create an archive, choose an encryption mode: ZipCrypto for maximum compatibility (it opens with a double-click on Windows) or AES-256 for strong encryption. To open an AES-256 archive, the recipient needs a tool such as Keka, The Unarchiver, or 7-Zip.

Q. Where is the ZIP saved?

A save panel lets you choose the location; it defaults to the same folder as the original, with the suggested file name already filled in, so the usual one click places the archive right next to the source.

Q. The right-click menu item doesn't appear

The item is provided as a macOS Service. If you don't see "Clean ZIP with NeatZip…" directly, look under the Services submenu of the right-click menu. You can also enable or reorder it in System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Services > Files and Folders. Launching NeatZip once after installation helps macOS register the Service.

Q. Does NeatZip collect any data?

No. NeatZip collects no data, requires no account, and works fully offline. Your files never leave your Mac. See the Privacy Policy for details.
